Dimethylformamide (DMF) is a transparent liquid that is miscible with water and most organic solvents. It is a commonly used solvent for

chemical reactions. Pure dimethylformamide is odorless,However, industrial grade or deteriorated dimethylformamide has a fishy odor

because it contains impurities of dimethylamine. The name comes from the fact that it is a dimethyl substitute of formamide (formamide),

with both methyl groups located on N (nitrogen) atoms.Dimethylformamide is a highly boiling polar (hydrophilic) non proton solvent that

can promote the progression of SN2 reaction mechanisms. Dimethylformamide is manufactured using formic acid and dimethylamine.

Dimethylformamide in strong bases such as sodium hydroxide or Strong acids such as hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid are unstable in

the presence (especially at high temperatures) and hydrolyze into formic acid and dimethylamine.

Used as a solvent in the production of synthetic leather. Used as a stationary phase in gas-liquid chromatography analysis. Used to synthesize

chlorpyrifos in pesticides. Used in medicine to synthesize sulfadiazine, doxycycline, cortisone, vitamin B6, etc.
